This system was built in May 2007. I wanted to build a large file storage system that I could access remotely. It had to be redundant, simple and economical, so no specialized hardware (RAID controllers, backplanes, standalone SATA controllers). I've put together a list of build steps based on the notes I took at that time. Some of the additional information gathering and benchmarking included here took place well after the initial build. The build could have definitely been easier, but I wanted to do things a certain way as well as experiment some along the way. The system is still up after a year with no problems, but I'm thinking of upgrading the OS soon.
